I frequently struggle with this question, too… A good compromise might be a light, grey/coloured outline instead of black (not quite so ‘harsh’ an edge), but – in my v. humble and readily ignorable opinion – I think no outline works best here… Just as an aside, are you doing the Children’s Book Illustration MA at Anglia Ruskin, by any chance?

  2. Hiya Amanda! Thanks for your comment. Yes, I think as soft or broken outline might be quite nice. I’ll also have to make a few changes to bg colours so he doesn’t disappear into the wall :) Well, this is the whole point of experimenting and testing :) And yes I am in my first year of the MA. It’s quite hectic now with deadlines rolling in. I wrote a bit about the course in previous entries.
